Anita even came by for sleepovers, lazy on Valery’s couch while they talked about hospital gossip.
It worked, at least for a while. And Valery believed this, because every day she threw out gifts from Ryan and Derrick. Cards, flowers, jewelry, expensive little ornaments, all left at her door and workplace by men who apparently thought shiny objects could glue her back together. Some packages sat untouched until the rain ruined them. Others she shoved into Anita’s hands with a flat, “Sell it, burn it, I don’t care.”
