The tape clicked off. The room went silent. Then Gideon said softly, “Damn her.” Violet stared at the black envelope in her hand. Not a place. Not a place. The silver key burned hot in her pocket. And somewhere outside the window, the blue ribbon fell from the glass and vanished into the rain.

And then there was Violet. She fought at Eloria’s side, though her movements lacked the conviction of her teacher. Her spells cracked the air, bright and deadly, but her eyes never strayed far from the forest below. From the cliff. From the river. Her chest burned with a question she could not voice, a fear she could not allow Eloria to see: Where is Kael? A shriek cut the night.

Violet ran as she went to the place farthest from the organizers because there would be more trees and more small caves to hide in. Though it would be easy to find an ideal hiding place, but it was not, Violet was confused for a moment because she felt that any place could be discovered if she shone the light. The cave she found was too small, and even though she could get into it, the cave door didn't have anything to cover it up.

I followed her line of sight but saw nothing. Vines rose up from the floor and wrapped around the air. Violet’s arm pulled backwards, bringing the vines closer. A pained grunt was heard, making me realize that it was actually someone that we couldn’t see. “Pull your gift back or else these vines will turn into wolfsbane. Now, that’s some pretty painful shit from what I’ve heard. You have fifteen seconds to decided,” Violet told the invisible person. To make her point and psych out whoever the fuck it was, a new vine appeared as the seconds ticked by.

He laughs again. I find myself relaxing slightly. Maybe this is good. Maybe talking to someone who isn’t one of the three heirs currently destroying my sanity is exactly what I need. Caelan steps closer. Not enough to make me uncomfortable. Not yet. “You know, your eyes really are that color.” I blink. “What?” “Violet.” I shift awkwardly. “Last time I checked.” His gaze lingers. “They’re beautiful.” Heat touches my cheeks. “Thanks.” His eyes drop briefly toward my mouth.

Violet shouted as she felt something ominous rise within her. She left them to do her bidding as she got out her crystal and tried to gaze into the ball. She only saw darkness and she almost yelled in frustration. She opened a tray that carried different poultices and began adding them to the mixture in Elise's hands. She collected the bowl and began chanting. The vulture began to shake and say Luna stone, Luna stone in a hoarse voice. Bianca backed away while Elise looked at the animal with interest. Violet suddenly had to stop mixing when her phone rang. “ It is your mate Elise and he is asking for you.”

Liam didn’t like it, but I saw something in Violet’s expression I had never seen before. Desperation. It seemed like she was pleading with me which was weird. Violet never begged anyone. Against my better judgment, I nodded. “Fine. But if you think you can manipulate me again, you’re wrong.” We walked to a quieter part of the hall, away from the music and the crowd. My heart pounded in my chest. My emotions felt like a storm I couldn’t control. Violet took a deep breath, “I’ve missed you,” she said softly. “I’ve wanted to contact you for months.”

Hiding behind nobility when really I was just a coward. Afraid of hurting her. Afraid of becoming something else. Afraid of— “Enzo Santini. As I live and breathe.” I looked up. Violet. She stood at the edge of the VIP section, barely dressed in her costume. Red lace that left nothing to the imagination. Her dark hair fell in waves over her shoulders. “Violet.” I didn’t move. Just watched her with detached interest. “Mind if I join you?” She didn’t wait for an answer. Just sank onto the couch beside me. Close. Too close.
