I nodded in affirmation. “Now, leave my presence!” I returned back in shame. I felt very disgusted, so I scrubbed myself raw in the bath. I scrubed my skin until it turned red, but the filth clung to me, thicker than dirt, heavier than blood. The feeling of disgust transcended the physical. It was imprinted deep within me, out of the reach of soap and water. I pressed my palms to my face and sobbed silently, for if I let the sound escape, I feared it would never stop.
