The gates gave way with a violent groan, tearing off their concrete anchors, and the vehicle surged forward into the blinding, freezing downpour of the Blackwood night.

The back windshield shattered, showering Emma with sticky pieces of safety glass. She cried out as she struggled to keep the car on the road. She swerved, sideswiped a concrete barrier before she got the wheel under control.

I let go of the steering wheel and pressed myself back into my seat. I tried to relax, knowing the impact was coming. Tense muscles were easier to damage. I let my hands fall to my sides and hoped for the best as the cement barrier reared up outside my driver’s window. When I slammed into it, I rocked sideways with such force that my seat belt knocked the air out of my lungs. My head slapped against something hard, and white stars erupted in my vision. Something warm and wet trickled down into my eye.

A massive ring of white plasma erupted from the point of impact, slicing through the air and instantly vaporizing the floating cobblestones and uprooted trees. Malik was launched backward like a cannonball. The Apex crashed through the heavy stone walls of the Boma’s watchtower, obliterating the colonial structure entirely before skipping violently across the asphalt of Boma Road and slamming into the reinforced steel facade of an abandoned bank. The gravitational anomaly holding the roof of the Warren instantly snapped. The earth crashed back down into place with a terrifying, seismic thud. The Boma courtyard was a ruined crater, but the bedrock held. The sanctuary beneath was safe.

“Now!” Marcus slammed on the brakes. The sedan fishtailed violently on the wet leaves, and he spun the wheel, the engine roaring as he threw the car into reverse. The pursuing sedan, caught completely by surprise, had no time to react. The impact was a brutal, jarring crunch of metal and shattering glass.
