Chapter 1 Lyra's POV I wrapped my legs tighter around his waist, pulling him closer against me. My body was on fire, every nerve ending screaming for more contact. His deep groan vibrated through his chest and into mine, making everything inside me clench with desperate need. My fingers dug into his shirt as he continued kissing and sucking at my neck. He grabbed my waist, half-pulling, half-lifting me toward the bedroom. I felt more like a doll being moved than a person being carried. I knew this was wrong. I knew I shouldn't be here in his arms, and shouldn't be enjoying every second of this forbidden moment.

"This version of us that laughs and goes on desert safaris and doesn't talk about territories and wars?" Dante was quiet for a moment, his fingers drawing lazy circles on her bare shoulder. "I don't know," he admitted finally. "But I want to try. I want to find a way to be both—the man who protects his empire and the man who makes his wife happy." "That's all I needed to hear." They fell asleep like that, wrapped around each other, two more days of paradise stretching ahead before they had to return to the complicated, dangerous world waiting for them.

"Well, sometimes I watch T.V. I like, well, love to read. So I do that a lot when I'm alone." "Like what? Romance, crime thrillers?" I shrugged. "Sometimes. I really like the classics. Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, George Elliot (who was a woman, by the way). I also like the Russians, like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. 'War and Peace' is amazing." "You've read 'War and Peace'?" "Yeah, twice. It's excellent." I cocked my head. "How about you, what do you like to read?"

And not just any romance—dark romance, enemies-to-lovers, mafia romance, arranged marriage, all the subgenres I devoured in private. "This is our most popular section," Edward said, noticing my reaction. "Romance readers are loyal. And they buy a lot of books." "I can see that." Next to it was fantasy. Then a section labeled "Romantasy" that made my heart skip. Sarah J. Maas. Jennifer L. Armentrout. Rebecca Yarros. All my favorites, beautifully displayed. "You read?" Edward asked. "Yeah. A lot, actually." "What genres?" "These, mostly." I gestured to the romance and fantasy sections. "Dark romance. Romantasy. Anything with morally gray characters and impossible love stories."

And the other… doomed to eternal longing. “Serene really was a jealous goddess,” I muttered bitterly. “Couldn’t handle you touching her man, so she cursed the bloodline.” “It wasn’t jealousy,” Morgana said sharply. “The council was starting wars. I led the Great War. And the war against you, Alaric. For that… I am sorry.” Alaric’s dragon growled low. “I had to protect Liza until she matured,” Morgana said. “Every hardship you all faced… was training. But there’s one more secret—one I never wanted to speak.”

Don’t work too hard, will you?’ And, before any more inane remarks escaped her lips, she turned for the still-open door. ‘I’ll see you tomorrow,’ he said. ‘Be good.’ The irony was so faint, she wasn’t even sure it was there. ‘You too’, she said, with idiotic brightness. ‘Nighty-night.’ ‘Goodnight.’ And he shut the door behind her.

I could hear them laughing about something, their voices melding together in the warm summer wind. Audrey's hand rested comfortably on Ray's forearm, a diamond ring glinting in the sun. The wedding had been four days after the fire started in an intimate ceremony at the local chapel. The town had celebrated their wedding, throwing a party in the hotel where most of the evacuees were staying. Everyone said it was the best party in the history of the town, as everyone celebrated instead of worrying over something we had no control over.

Rena: Five years prior Rena hummed happily as she walked through the corridors of the castle, reading from one of her favourite books. Fall was near, she could feel it on the air; the days were growing shorter with a slight chill hitting the air every day. Rena kept humming, thinking of Blaine and how happy he made her. Everyone had someone, she thought; all except for Vera. Val had Thane, Valena and Sandrine would be married soonl and Rena had Blaine. Rena only wished she could find someone for her oldest sister Vera.
