My mood dropped. I drew the curtains apart. The light hit instantly, golden and warm as the soft evening sun filtered through the narrow gap. It stretched lazily across the floor, claiming the space little by little as I spread the fabric apart. The warmth kissed my face, and without thinking, I smiled. It wasn’t much — a faint, tired smile — but it felt good. The sky outside was a rich, fiery orange, the kind that made everything look softer, calmer. I stood there, letting the glow wash over me, allowing my smile to widen just a little more.

Jack’s breath froze in his chest. Jack despised it when women were told to ‘smile more.’ And he hated the phrase, ‘You’d be so much prettier if you’d just smile.’ His sisters had been on the end of one or both of those awful lines at one time or another. He shared their hatred of it. So when Dianna smiled at him, he knew it didn’t make her more beautiful—she was already beautiful, even if he’d had a tough time admitting it to himself—no, when she smiled at Jack like that, with genuine warmth and affection, it broke down part of the wall of ice he’d contracted around his damaged heart.

but he wasn’t smiling at me. she was across from him. red sweater, black hair twisted up, a little loose like she wanted it to fall. laughing too loud, the kind of laugh that fills a room even when nobody asked for it. leaning in, elbow propped, eyes glued to him like he was the only man alive. and he… he gave her that smile. not the half-grimace he gives at work, not the one he used on me when he thought i wasn’t watching. this one was soft, warmer, like he’d been saving it.

Without wasting any more time, I struggled to come down from the bed but he held me back. The contact of his warm skin on mine made me feel this sensation that I had never felt before, it was like a touch that made almost melt into his arms. "I was just joking, Eva" I heard him and blinked, then blinked rapidly again. Then I saw a smile suddenly play on his lips. Who smiles like that?. His smile was enchanting, I had never seen any one smile the way he did;It looked different, warm and playful. No one ever smiled at me like that, especially not in Liam's pack.

A strange glint flickered in his eyes, a smug smile playing on his lips. I screamed, and the phone slipped from my hand. Ryan's voice, filled with panic, came from the speaker. "Honey! What happened? Are you okay?" Victor seemed startled by my scream. He stood up, his expression slightly softening from his smugness. I quickly picked up the phone and said to Ryan in a trembling voice, "It's okay, honey. The power went out just now, and I got a scare. Luckily, it didn't last long."

Kaelen "He smiled at you," I said. "He smiles at people," she said. "He is a warm and friendly man. That is what warm and friendly men do when they meet people." "He smiled at you," I said again. "The specific version. Not the general friendly version that he distributes to the room at large. The version that has a particular destination and is aimed deliberately at it."

That pause was twelve years of Cassie Carter looking at me across a room and communicating with the specific and particular precision of a woman who had spent her life learning to wound without leaving marks. "No," I said. "I'm here." She smiled. The smile had the specific and beautiful quality of all of Cassie's smiles, it was a real smile in the technical sense, it involved the correct muscles, it had the particular and practiced warmth of a woman who had been complimented on her smile since she was four years old. It was also, in the specific and simultaneous way of all of Cassie's best performances, an entirely cold thing.

But I definitely have to come up with something. Suddenly, I felt his cold hand wrapped around my warm hand which broke me out of my conscious thoughts. I looked up to meet his brown eyes. "Don't worry," he said softly with a warm smile. That smile! That's truly one drop-dead smile he has got and so contagious that I reciprocated right away instinctively.
