I planted myself firmly in front of the window, refusing to budge. When brute force didn't work, he tried persuasion. "Scarlett, listen to me. Kill these useless cats, and we'd have six slots. Then we could raise more beasts. We'd be invincible."

The little ones who are 3 to 10 should be thought how to use catapult to fight. Liam made a face, looking up at me defensively. "Aw, come on, Alpha... but I'm only eleven years old!" I raised an eyebrow, keeping my tone deadpan. "So what? You're old enough. An eleven-year-old can become an Alpha in the right circumstances. You think enemies are going to wait until you're twenty to attack?"

"Yes, apparently, the Supreme Alpha decided this at the last minute. He sent messengers to other packs and shared the new rules on the bulletin board." Curious, we walked to the spot where the bulletin board was nailed to the wall in the middle of the courtyard. Several rules were listed, and as I examined them, confusion settled in my mind. "Wolves under eighteen can't compete? Only men can participate, not women? You need to be a skilled warrior and still not have found your mate?" I couldn't comprehend the logic behind these restrictions. "This is ridiculous. The New Moon competition was for everyone. Why did my father come up with these stupid rules?"

I sniff at the air, smelling another youngling from my pack who, like me, just turned 18. In my pack, if you are younger than 100, you are considered a youngling. When you turn 18, you are allowed to take part in the ceremony held that year. During the ceremony, packs from around the area converge to one pack's land, and the younglings fight each other. The best fighter goes with the best pack, and the rest are dispersed by how well they fought. The pack member at my door is Molli Bray, a lower wolf who doesn't ever maintain eye contact for long. Molli opens the door and rushes over to where I am sitting in the window. She lowers her eyes to the floor, avoiding my gaze, before speaking.
