I could feel it. I was next in line for the position of the Alpha. It was two months till the Carmella, and I'd not yet found my mate. I was going to suffer for being the freak of the Pack. This was a big crime. Anyone who ever happened to pass their eighteenth year without finding their mate, here in the South Pack, was considered an anomaly. They were always banished, while the unfortunate ones ended up being killed. I swallowed hard at the thought. A knock on the door jerked me away from my thought. "Come in," I said in a placid tone, sensing it was my mother. I watched in the mirror as the door swung aside and true to my expectation, it was her.

Which meant that I was to go through my ceremony truly alone. At the Midnight ceremony, I will also discover another aspect about myself, which is my place in the wolf hierarchy, my tier. There were three tiers in the wolf hierarchy, Alpha, Delta and Omega. Alphas were the rarest of them all, born leaders. Deltas were commoner than Alphas, but unlike being an Alpha, being a Delta was not inherited from the parents. Omegas were the commonest tier, and like Deltas, it was totally random being an Omega.

And then they were both laughing and the room relaxed and it was fine. James took an immediate interest in Catherine and followed her around for the entire first visit asking questions that Catherine answered with complete seriousness. Nora offered her the rabbit-and-rain book, which was her highest form of regard. Catherine stayed for two weeks. She went back to France with photographs and a promise to return. She did return. Twice more that year. **** July brought something I had not seen coming since January. The tech acquisition, which had gone through with the modified employment conditions, had a problem.

He offered me more, offered me something I didn't know I needed, something I thought I no longer deserved. A home. A family. Brotherhood. The Nightmare Warriors have been my family for years. But now, I don't know if I even have them any longer. I've proven not to be trusted. This isn't the first time I have put my needs before the clubs and that goes against the number one rule of the club.

“Six out of the eight packs that are strictly our allies have vowed to help us. They believe that the Goddess has made this mating and that no one can oppose it. The other two, New Moon and Shadow packs, refuse to support us, but vow to remain neutral in the war to come.” “And what of the packs that we share?” Former-Alpha Jared asks. “Of those five, we will only maintain two,” Zak grimly states. Muttered curses and gasps fill the room. “Which two?” Dad asks. “Blood Moon and Tranquility packs,” Zak answers. “Those are the two smallest packs of the five!” Former-Gamma Richard exclaims. “How many warriors does that bring us to?” his wife, Lauren, asks. “430,” Charlie answers. “That isn’t in

I read the preamble. It established the alliance as a lawful body under Blood Kingdom territorial code, which allowed any group of five or more recognized pack Alphas to form a formal coalition for the purposes of addressing violations of kingdom law. The violation they were citing was the ongoing recognition of a same sex mate bond by Blood Moon's Alpha, in contravention of Blood Kingdom elder assembly statute. I read the stated grievances.

"It means war is inevitable. Darius is moving faster than we predicted. With four packs under his control, he has enough power to challenge Nightveil—and possibly defeat us if we're not ready.“ ”We need to find allies,“ one of the Beta Council members said. ”Moonwhisper Pack, Silverwood, maybe—“ ”Greenfield Pack," Archer cut in, glancing at me. “They are our closest neighbors and have solid military strength. If we can get Alpha Alex's support—” All eyes suddenly turned to me. I felt my face flush. “Don't look at me like that.” “Callista,” Kaelos said softly, "a mate bond is a natural alliance between two packs. If you and Alex can... work out your differences, it would greatly help our posi

my mother says. “Do you hear the words coming out of your mouth, mother? You’re willing to go to war rather than punish a couple of she-wolves for their misbehavior? And I will remind you that Alpha Roman may not be allied with many packs, but he owns three packs that are managed by his people. He is allied to Alpha Waylon, our neighbor, whose pack strategically straddles the north and south and he’s allied with Alpha Will in the south. Alpha Will’s father may not have been the most powerful Alpha in his time, but the alliance with Alpha Roman has made Will much more powerful. You’d both be wise to remember that before you go starting a war that we can’t possibly hope to win.”
