The book she was reading now was a huge, oversized volume with thick leather binding, cracked along the spine. It probably weighed ten pounds, and was at least twelve inches wide and long. She had it opened to the middle of the book, and each page she turned crackled with age. The pages were thick, so much thicker than those of modern books, and yellow with age. From brightly colored illustrations, glamorous celebrity photos, to simple designs with only embossed titles and the author’s name. All of it helped me imagine my main character more clearly, not just the story itself, but the outward image I wanted readers to see at first glance. On one shelf, I found a book with a cover of a woman leaning against a window, soft light touching her face, forming a silhouette that was wistful yet strong. I held the book for a long moment before looking at Liam. “Like this ” I whispered. “Someone who looks fragile, but is actually strong.” Liam studied the cover for a few seconds, then nodded slowly. “I get what you mean.”

But she was also intimidated by it. “Hehe.. You can always ask me if you’re confused about something..” Dawn smiled warmly at her. “Can I? Wow.. I live with a real author! My gosh! Thank you for this Dawn! My gosh! This picture on the cover is so beautiful. It looks professionally done.. Where did you have this printed?” “Oh--that.. I sent that to a publishing company based in the USA. It’s called Wordsmith Literature.” “Wait… In the USA? As in--America?!!!”

But I knew some hill folk—especially a hoodoo man named Clive Hartley—who could read Latin, so I put it aside for later. I looked back into the box and of course, that’s when I found it. The book that’s caused all this trouble. The Way of Ah-Tzenul. Course, that’s not what’s printed on the cover. There’s a picture of some sorta tribal man squatting down with both hands raised to the sky etched into the cover and traced in silver. Otherwise, it’s a plain-looking book, all bound in pebbly black leather.

I scurry away, ready to leave the embarrassment behind. I rush to my bedroom instead of going to the office. I shake my head in frustration. Literally, I could’ve grabbed any other freaking book. Of course, I pick the one that screams sex!

Sounds good. Wish I could join you.... Then I get a quick shot of the cover. What on earth's she reading? Tipping back her book to see the jacket, it's a bright splash of cartoon figures against a gentian blue sky. Smiley faced men and women frolic with a dog in front of a kids' classic 'first house drawing': a square box, with a triangle of a roof and a window in each corner. I peer at the blurb on the back.... "A few weeks ago, it was finite element analysis and Fourier series. Now you're reading chick-lit?"
