His hand stroked my hair slowly, steady, grounding me when I felt like I was floating off somewhere dark.
“I hate that you think you have to carry this alone,” he murmured. “I hate that you don’t let yourself fall apart, even when you need to.”
“I don’t want to be weak.”
He pulled back, looking down at me, eyes sharp. “You think needing me makes you weak?”
I didn’t answer.
He kissed me again, softer this time, but deep, dragging. “Needing someone isn’t weakness, River. It’s human.”
