It took a few minutes to return to a proper breathing rate before I peeked. “They are gone. Thornhill is ahead,” Sephone cooed. My journey up the hill continued for the next hour before I arrived at Thornhills gate. Every visitor, or better still, every person going in through the gate had their belongings thoroughly searched. Those with arms had them seized and tossed into a barrel. There were a few food trucks in the line, moving as slow as the search.

This night seemed particularly long, as the faint morning light shot out from the east, Thorne had been aimlessly circling around this city. He was angry about Thea's no-show. He had been looking forward to her calling him, but she stood him up. It is said that she had him on her mind, but he didn't believe it. Thorne was filled with grievances. He drove back home. As he approached his doorstep, the twilight was hazy, and in the dim morning light, he caught a glimpse through the car windshield of a small, red shadow squirming at his doorstep.

One of Rosie’s guards strode in, chest heaving, his cloak stained with dust and blood. “Alpha,” he said, bowing to her, ignoring me entirely. “A rider has arrived from Thorns. A messenger. Urgent seal.” Rosie stood at once. “Where?” “In the courtyard, my lady.” She turned to me. “You’ll forgive me, Alpha Emily. But if you don’t mind—” “Of course,” I said, rising with her. “I’ll accompany you.” Together, we crossed the courtyard, the night air thick with frost and suspicion.
