NATHANIEL'S POV March 10th, 2026 The private airstrip was bathed in the harsh blue glow of the runway lights, but all I could see was her. Wendy stepped out of the car I'd sent for her, and for a second, my heart actually stuttered against my ribs. She was wearing a tight, charcoal-grey knit sweater dress that clung to every delicious curve I'd spent years ignoring. It hit her mid-thigh, showing off the black silk stockings and the Saint Laurent pumps I'd bought her. She looked like a goddamn dream—half-nerdy researcher, half-filthy secretary.

And I, the fool, would end up questioning myself. I didn’t bother to argue. “I have something to tell you. Let’s talk at home,” I said flatly. Lena stood there still wondering what was happening, she couldn't hear everything because she had Airpods on and now being choosed by Jayden felt weird. She wrapped a blanket around her shoulders as Graten offered her a glass of water. “Wendy, do you remember how you got here?” Staring at a spot on the rug in front of her, Wendy nodded her head and began to speak as if she were in a daze.

She couldn't accept it! Wendy acted as though she was trying to stand up, but halfway through, she swayed unsteadily and fell towards Carl. Carl took a step back, still holding Renee. Wendy ended up sprawled at their feet, looking disheveled. At this point, most people wouldn't dare to push their luck further, even if they fainted. But Wendy wasn't like most people. She tremblingly reached out and grabbed Carl's pant leg.

Thud. The footsteps were just outside the door now. Wendy acted fast and opened the window. It was the second floor, but she didn't hesitate. After climbing out, she jumped. She landed hard on the lawn below, feeling sharp pain in her ankle. It hurt so much, it felt unbearable. Ignoring her disheveled state, she fumbled for her phone and dialed Cecelia. The call connected, and Cecelia's voice came through. "Wendy? It's late. Where are you? Having fun somewhere?"
