What in the world? I see a small crowd of angry faces egging them on. Why isn’t anyone stopping this? A girl yells, “Kick the crap out of him, Gaston! Show the royal punk werewolves aren’t to be messed with!” The wind ruffles Sapphire Eyes’s short, glossy brown hair, making it look like he's doing one of those shampoo commercials that make you wish you had better hair. I notice a tattoo on his back: large, black tribal markings that zigzag across his shoulders and go down to the middle of his back in a complicated pattern. When he throws another hard blow, I whistle to get their attention. Andddd it’s ignored. I sigh and make my way toward them.

Long jagged lines that once ran from my shoulders down to my waist. I covered them eventually after overcoming my fear of riddles of course. The tattoo artist worked for nearly ten hours straight, weaving thick black ink over the damaged skin until the scars disappeared beneath the design of a massive spider spreading across my back. Its legs stretch outward over my shoulders, the body resting directly over my spine. The bell rings and my opponent steps forward. He is large, muscular, the type of fighter who relies on raw power rather than strategy. Normally I might enjoy testing him slowly, breaking him down piece by piece.

It was an inverted cross with snakes wrapping around it. It was demonic. He was demonic. I mean who gets an inverted cross tattooed on their body? I walk to him and stand a few feet behind. “Why are we still here?” I ask looking at his broad back, scrunching my eyes due to the bright sun.

I acknowledged and finally got a good look at the man, his chocolate skin stretched over his wide shoulders and my eye involuntarily followed the path of the tattoos littering his arms. The clearing of his throat snapped me from my inspection and my eyes flew to his, where almost black orbs stared at me with an eyebrow raised. “Sorry,” I mumbled, embarrassed to have been caught staring. “The right is of a phoenix rising from the ashes and the left is a wolf in the dark forest.” He smirked, turning sideways so I could see his ink clearer in the sun. “Do you mind me asking what it means?” I reached my hand out to run my fingers over the wolf’s canines.

I sighed but my mother’s face told me, no matter what I said, I was not going to win, so I decided to grab the bracelet, a shawl from the hook by the door, and walked out. **** Most werewolves—women werewolves—who in Astoria wore gowns, would find it a deterrent to climb up piles but I have no shame. We have acres of land to ourselves. All ladies. So I hiked my skirt up to my thigh and began my climb up.

Dark lines and curves. Almost like wings. Or something written.

She slowly started walking her fingers across my chest and tracing my tattoos. “I like these.” She said as she continued to trace them. I had the wilderness I love tattooed across my chest and arms. Bear, deer, birds, owls, rabbits, badgers and of course wolves all amongst the trees and forest that they lived in. “Oh yeah. What is your favorite?” I asked lightly.

The light traveled over the line of his shoulders and the slope of his spine I noticed a tattoo on his back close to his shoulders I hadn’t picked up before: a spider inked over what looked like the faded outline of a skull. Faint shadows of the old design showed beneath the new one. I considered asking, but some things felt private, like bookmarks in someone else’s book. I let it be.
