“No,” he said, voice rough, “it isn’t.”
I took another step, so close now I could feel the warmth of him, could see the faint pulse at the hollow of his throat. “Then prove it.”
He froze. “Lilly.”
“Prove it,” I said again, my voice trembling but sure.
For a moment, time stopped. The wards flickered faintly around us, wind catching his cloak. Then Kael reached out, fingers brushing my jaw, hesitant as if afraid the world might shatter at the contact.
