"Did hear me Ace? Derek is dead. He was found this morning at the lake. ME said overdose which probably means Alvarez." I sat up from my bed, throwing my legs off the side and placed my head in my hands. I was feeling better from whatever drug my father gave me but I was still a bit hung over. Maybe I was hallucinating, dreaming. "Get the fuck up!" Daniel yelled and it jolted me to my feet. Only one man ever yelled at me and I fucking hated him. "Watch your mouth. What the fuck are you talking about? Where is Derek?" "He is dead. We need to go."

"It's all about getting a master and a piece of land, and I will do just that." As we settled on board, Derek handed me a tablet. I took it, feeling a knot form in my stomach as I grasped it tightly. "When did he die?" I asked Derek, my voice strained. "Last night. He was murdered by some people who invaded the police station," Derek replied solemnly. I closed my eyes, trying to process this new piece of devastating information. "Who would dare enter a police station to commit such an act?" I muttered, my mind racing.

Chapter 28 NADIA'S POV My heart skipped, and I started to feel panic rise within me. Whatever they were going to do to me next wasn't going to be good at all. I couldn't help feeling that the next thing they would do was try to kill me. Derek took back the shepherd pie, took another spoon casually and dropped it on the bedside table next to me. Derek said, offended. “Yes, the last time you were maced by one of your wife’s sisters. What had happened then?” his mother asked. “I’ll explain later. Now, I have to get to the hospital. Chelsea needs me,” Derek said. “You don’t know which hospital they took her to - if they took her to a hospital at all,” Deidre reasoned. “They better have,” Derek said with heat. “She was puking her guts out and she fainted right in my arms. Then she came out the stall holding her stomach. It’s obvious it’s something serious.”

A loud groan rises up from the crowd when the sword again refuses to go all the way through. Fuck it all to the deepest pits of hell. I walk over to Carl and take the sword from him. “I’m sorry,” he mumbles. “It’s not your fault,” I try to reassure him. “We’re notoriously difficult to kill.” A torrent of blood runs from Derek’s mouth and the two wounds in his neck, yet he still shows no sign of dying. His mouth opens and closes soundlessly as he tries to draw in a breath. His eyes are big and afraid, pleading for death. It’s a pitiable sight. I throw the sword in the air, catch it by the hilt, and drive it point first into the soft space between his neck and shoulder, into his heart.

He returned to his human form. “I was not expecting that.” His last words were spoken as it drained the life from his eyes. Staggering away from him, we could hear Asher running through the woods coming into the clearing. “Baby, you're hurt.” He whimpered as he came into the clearing. As he was walking over, Derek appeared out of nowhere, right behind Asher. “Asher behind you.” I screamed, but it was too late. Derek drove the knife straight into Asher’s chest.
