Lucian had taken a bullet for me, and I’d left him, bleeding and broken, because I was too scared to face what he meant to me.
My phone buzzed in the cupholder, yanking me from my thoughts. I glanced at the screen—Director Hargrove, a name I hadn’t seen in months. My heart kicked, a jolt of dread mixing with curiosity. Hargrove was not entirely straight, after his lies against the train heist, he sort of changed a new leaf. Turns out that Lucian had taught him a big lesson for lying and now he was Lucian’s eyes and ears at the field office.
I pulled into a gas station, the smell of fuel sharp as I parked, and answered, my voice rough. “Director Hargrove, what’s up?”
