A dark sedan pulled up the gravel drive, not where the crew had parked, but on the far side of the garden, near the old tool shed.
The driver’s door opened.
And Luther stepped out.
He wasn't in a suit from Geneva. He wore dark jeans and a sweater, his face drawn with a fatigue deeper than jet lag. In his hands, he carried not a briefcase, but a small, sophisticated-looking audio transmitter and a laptop.
He saw me. Our eyes met across the overgrown lawn. In his gaze was no surprise, only a grim, shared understanding.
“You got a letter,” he said. It wasn't a question.
