The other figures — the shadows, the twisted versions of their friends — stepped closer, their eyes hollow and cold.
“You can’t leave,” Nadia hissed from behind them. “Not now. Not after you’ve heard the call.” In that moment, as Lily’s screams echoed through the woods, the ground cracked open entirely, swallowing her whole. The others reached out, desperate to save her, but it was no use. WildWood had claimed her.
Jake stood frozen, his chest heaving with disbelief. But in the silence that followed, he could hear it again — that twisted laugh. The forest was waking. It was hungry.
