Elodie leaned against the cold stone wall of the hallway, her hand pressed against the sharp ache in her side. The twins were quiet, but the weight of them felt like lead in her marrow. She looked into the polished brass of a wall sconce.

The eyes were flat, digital violet. Subject Zero’s mouth moved in the reflection, though no sound came out. Elodie stumbled back, her heel catching on the rug.
