Whatever he decides, he keeps it to himself.
He steps back.
He walks to Nara and they speak one more time, too quiet for me to catch, and she says something that makes him look down briefly at the floor. Then she touches his arm — just briefly, and she turns and walks toward me.
"Ready," she says.
I look at Kael one last time across the hall.
He holds my gaze.
I nod.
And I turn and walk out.

The flight back is quieter than the flight out.
Going out, the city had fallen away beneath me and I had felt the purposefulness of forward motion — of having a direction, a destination, a thing to do. The purposefulness of action is its own comfort. I have always known that about myself.
