Before I could press it, the screen suddenly lit up with an incoming call. An unknown number. My heart jolted violently, as though it would explode from the pressure. A paralyzing sense of dread swept over me. My fingers trembled as I swiped to answer the call. I held the phone to my ear. All I heard was silence. The only sound was my own rough, broken breathing, loud and unsteady like the rasp of a bellows. In that instant, I knew that this was a call from the kidnapper. He was watching us! He knew I was about to call the police. That was why he called—to warn me!

The police officer explained calmly, "After Miss Lawson was kidnapped, someone immediately called the police. We wouldn't have been able to find her so quickly if the phone call hadn't been made in time. If you want to thank someone, thank the person who called the police." Harvey was momentarily caught off guard. His eyes flickered slightly, appearing as if he was recalling something.

The light from his screen slightly blinded his sleepy eyes so he shut them and opened it again, there was still no call from the kidnapper and this got him worried, maybe the kidnapper was angry about his steps last night and decided not to call anymore but as he was thinking of this, his phone rang and it was a private number. "Hello?" He said slowly. "Nice try last night, man. But you must agree with me now that it would be nice if you don't mess up with me, right?" "Yes, so what's the first step and can I please ask you for a favor?" "Sure, go ahead" "I would like to speak to my wife and child" The caller laughed. I didn’t know who owns this and even though I am angry I picked up the phone because of the name that is registered there. Why is Lauren’s name popping in this phone? I looked at it and decided to answer while Jared is still looking at me. “ Hello lover boy,” a man said and I had to look at the phone again making sure if I did the right thing. “ Who are you? Where is Lauren?!” I shouted and assumed that this is her kidnapper. He laughed in the other line and I know by the quality that he is using a voice changer. “ Relax,” he or she said and right now, all I can see is red. All I want to do is kill this person right now.

During a lull, I checked my phone and saw that Anna had texted me a bunch of times last night, but my phone had been on silent so I hadn’t heard them. 7:05 PM: Want to get drinks tonight? 7:30 PM: Where are you? You better not be dead. 8:16 PM: WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME. Fine, be a bitch-face. 8:41 PM: I’m assuming your phone is broken otherwise I’m kicking your ass tomorrow. 10:14 PM: I really hope you aren’t dead, though. “So you are alive,” said Anna on the first ring. “Or you’re Dani’s kidnapper and are demanding a hefty ransom.”

Justin wanted to retaliate but Bryan stopped him by grabbing his shoulder, “Let her be. She’s under high-stress situation.” Serene had not yet stepped out of the room when her phone vibrated once again. Her trembling hands fished it out of her pocket. She did not know when Justin came to her side, she just saw her phone on his hand. He pressed the answer button and put the call on loudspeaker. His eyes met hers and gave her a signal to talk. “He-hello?” She asked, her voice trembling. “Ms. Ellis. I hope you’re staying true to your word and have not called the police,” the kidnapper drawled.

"Put it on speakerphone. Now." With shaking hands, Helena hit the speaker button. "Who is this?" she demanded. "You may call me Mr. N," the voice said. "And I'd advise against calling the police if you want the children to remain unharmed." Helena and I exchanged horrified looks. This was the kidnapper! "What do you want?" Helena cried. "We'll give you anything, just don't hurt the kids!" The voice laughed coldly. "I'm not speaking to you. Put Jade on, now."

I was alone with my ex-husband while our children were being held hostage by kidnappers who'd threatened to kill them. The absurdity of the situation would have been laughable if it weren't so horrifying. I wrapped my arms around myself and stared at my phone, willing it to ring with news about the children. I wasn’t sure anymore. Still, a small stupid part of me hoped. Because no matter how badly Vincent treated me, I couldn’t stop my heart from wanting him to choose me for once. The masked man pulled out his phone before dialing Vincent’s number. By the fourth call, Vincent finally picked up. The kidnapper immediately placed the phone on speaker. “Your wife has been captured by me,” he said bluntly. There was a brief silence. Then Vincent’s voice came through the phone casually. “Okay.”

Josh said removing his hands from his pockets and bringing out my phone. I checked the ID, and unknown caller. Not many people in the world knew my personal number, the only people with that privilege was either family, or a guard. Could it be the kidnapper calling for ransom? But the Lilly I knew would never give out my number to anyone, but then again, a yeast could change a person. "Hello who is this?" I asked immediately I answered the phone. I heard a female snort from the other side of the phone before a feminine voice sounded. " I have information about your daughter".
