The familiar smell of old books and cleaning supplies hit me as I burst through the glass entrance doors, but I barely registered it through the fog of panic that had consumed my thoughts. "Please, pick up the phone," I pleaded desperately into the device, my voice cracking with emotion as I spoke to the empty air around me. I could hear her phone ringing through my speaker, that familiar tone that I had heard countless times before when we would call each other to make plans. But now that innocent sound felt like a countdown to disaster, each ring marking another second that passed without knowing if she was safe.

Ring Ring Ring On the seventh floor of the Eastside apartments, in a small apartment consisting of a living room, a kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom, Cindy George was woken up by the ringing of her phone alarm at was 6.30 am. It was on a Monday and she had an interview at Black Enterprises at 8.30 and since she needed to doll herself up for the interview, she decided to wake up early. She was known to do her things slowly and perfectly.

I picked up my book again and decided to study before Clint got back. As I flipped the book open, my phone began to ring loudly.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself. One step at a time. I dialed the first number. I held the receiver to my ear, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Ring. Ring. Silence in the room. Then, a sound cut through the quiet. A phone began to ring. Not in my ear. Here. Inside the room. I froze. The handset slipped slightly in my sweat-dampened palm. The ringing was muffled, close. I turned slowly toward the armchair in the corner.

"Marrying Mr. Vance isn't something you can just walk into. You'll need time to mentally prepare. "Here's what we'll do. Mr. Vance will arrive tomorrow, so you'll have the whole night to consider. In the meantime, the ring stays here." With that, he left the ring behind, got into his diamond-encrusted car, and drove off. We stared at the blinding diamond, too scared to move. For once, the three women who had spent years scheming against me were suddenly united. They dragged me into the living room for a quick huddle and slipped the ring onto their fingers one by one.

Finally, I turned away quickly before he could change his mind. My fingers trembled as I dialed Jasper’s number from memory. Every digit burned into my soul. The phone pressed against my ear. Ring. My breathing stopped. Ring. Oh God… Ring. Pick up. Please pick up. Ring. The sound echoed endlessly into my ears. The guard behind me shifted nervously. “Hurry, ma’am.” “Quiet,” I snapped instinctively. The ringing continued. I felt shivers down my spine Why wasn’t he answering? Ring!

I opened my eyes, looked down and—feeling very little surprise—saw The King Wears Yellow sitting open before me on the den table. I loosed a shuddering sigh. There it was. The book that, apparently, I couldn’t get rid of. Something tore free inside. With amazingly little fanfare, I reached out and pulled the book toward me . . . The phone in the kitchen rang. Its shrill alarm jerked me upright. A shock ran through me. My earlier feelings of revulsion about that book returned, shaking off the blissful numbness I’d felt only minutes before. Like a recovered alcoholic who had nearly fallen off the wagon, I jerked my hands away from the book, pushed my chair back from the table and lurched uprig

Each clink of the dishes echoed in the stillness of the room. Amidst the gentle clatter, Emily's phone suddenly rang, breaking the silence. Startled, she quickly retrieved it from her pocket, only for the ringing to cease abruptly. Confused, she furrowed her brow, her curiosity piqued. Just as she was about to investigate the source of the sounds in the adjacent sitting room, a sense of foreboding gripped her.

I was instantly on alert as I thought something serious had happened. So, I quickly returned the call. "Hello, what's—" "Ms. Lawson, you're not dead, are you?" A sharp, impatient female voice interrupted. "I have something urgent to tell you! Are you deaf? Why didn't you pick up your phone?" I glanced at the screen. All the missed calls were from Zoe Street's mother, Christina McSpire. Why was she using different numbers? After a sleepless night, I could feel my frustration building. I asked, "Mrs. Street, what exactly is so urgent?"

"Three, two, one..." At this moment, a clear phone rang...
