“His name was Marco. You didn't remember him? You two are quite close.” Of course , I didn't forget him. I looked at him again. He used to sit with me on the steps in the evenings. He used to share his snacks. He once told me he would come back for me someday. His voice lingered faintly in my mind, not fully formed, like a memory I had buried too deeply. “What happened to him?” I asked. “That is the strange part,” she said with a sigh. “One day he was here, the next day he was gone. No paperwork. No transfer. His file disappeared. We never found out who took him.”

“You have been thinking about her? Where were you when she was struggling to raise me alone? Where were you when she was fighting for her life after the accident? Where the hell were you when I needed a family to stay when my mother passed away? “That’s… that’s what I need to explain. It may not seem like it but I tried to be present even as a secret. Things happened, things I couldn’t control. I was forced to disappear.” Forced to disappear? What is he? A drug dealer ? Or wanted by the FBI? His words sounded like riddles, more like excuses wrapped in mystery. “You left,” I snapped before I could stop myself. The anger spilled out, raw and jagged, tearing through the mask I’d tried to keep.

“B-Because… people showed up too quickly, sir. They rushed in to help. Our men panicked and fled immediately with the car.” “Steven’s slipped through our fingers too many times,” I muttered, more to myself than to him. “It’s like… he just refuses to die.” I lifted my head again, my stare sharpening. “What about the people you sent?” I asked curtly. “Where are they now?” He lowered his head even further. “They’ve… disappeared, sir.” A short laugh slipped from my lips. Soft. Cold. Empty. “Disappeared?” I repeated. I took a slow step toward him.

But something about her vanishing felt like failure, the kind that dug into my ribs and made me feel like I should’ve done more. Then there was Antonio. Whether he was missing, taken, or buried in the darkness, I didn’t know. None of us did. But the way the ground had shifted, the way a sound, wrong and inhuman, had echoed from beneath the rubble just before he disappeared made my stomach turn. People didn’t just vanish like that. Not without help.

“You… never came.” Her words echoed in his mind as invisible knives stabbed his heart many times over it should’ve killed him. How could he refute the truth? He wasn’t there beside them when they needed him most. Their sole protector. What he did might as well be the same with that of abandonment.

They would remain in the shadows until they decided it was time to show up and ruin your life again. The one person that worried me the most, though, was Lorenzo. He had slipped through our fingers again. There was no trace and no sightings of him. Nothing turned up. It was just like he’d vanished into the air. And the worst part? I knew he hadn’t gone far. Men like him always found a way to come back into the fold.

I made away with the thoughts as I pushed through until I reached him. “What the hell happened?” I demanded under my breath. I didn't so much as give him a second to breathe, because in all honesty, he didn't deserve it. He’d has plenty of time wherever the fuck he was. “Where were you?” “I tried to send word back, Alpha, but the comm, it just died.” He looked at me, his face tight. “Out of nowhere. I couldn’t reach anyone.” “What?! Are you even listening to yourself?’ My fists clenched. “You’re telling me you vanished for twelve hours because your comm malfunctioned?”

He roared. And then. He vanished.

And he indeed was. He had been inhaling heroine and other drugs from time her disappearance had started taking troll over him. He couldn't deal with the stress. And thus, all he could do was drink and inhale until the painful memories of his time with her, would vanish away from his mind, leaving him nothing but hollow and numb. He didn't know where to find her anymore. All his resources had failed. There was no clue of her. It was as if she had disappeared in thin air. He couldn't get to meet with Evelyn and Chloe either. Apparently, the orders from that Brigadier were like stamp on paper. There was no repelling against his words.

My lungs constricted, squeezing all the air out, and felt like cotton balls rammed down in my throat. I know it was just a cup of hot chocolate that mom dropped into the floor, but I cannot shake the feeling that my pool of blood spilled all over the floor. I thought she was alerted by the strange masked man inside the room, but when I turned my gaze back to the spot where my phantom last stood, he was gone. I lost him. It should have taken me by surprise how he disappeared so quickly, but it didn't. That's all that he's good at. Leaving me I am at my most vulnerable state.
