Disgust and disbelief warred within me as I confronted the man I thought I knew. My heart felt as if it were being squeezed within my chest, each word a struggle against the cascade of emotions threatening to overwhelm me. "I thought I knew you, Dylan," I said, my voice cracking with the ache of disillusionment. "I thought we had something special when you returned to me... to us. But then I lost the most precious part of us, our unborn child. And all the while, here you are, sharing a bed with the same woman who tore our world apart."

"He looked at you the way he used to look at me. He protected you the way he used to protect me. You took everything, Nova. So yeah, I took everything from you. Fair trade." I roared, slamming the phone against the side of the tub, water splashing over the edge. My chest heaved violently. My mind raced, spiraling, trying to make sense of what I had just seen. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. She was supposed to be broken, crying and begging. Not… this. Not laughing in someone else’s arms like I meant nothing. Like those six years meant nothing. A bitter, ugly feeling crawled up my throat twisted together into something suffocating. “She’s mine…” I whispered, more to myself than anyone else. Elysia let out a dry laugh. “She was yours.”
