The sea was calm that morning, its surface like glass, reflecting the pale sky above. Lucia stood barefoot on the balcony of the coastal villa, her silk robe fluttering in the breeze. She had barely slept. The silence was too loud. Amaro joined her, a steaming cup of espresso in hand. He offered it wordlessly. “Thanks,” she murmured, taking a sip. They watched the horizon together, the quiet between them filled with unspoken thoughts. “Do you think it’s really over?” Lucia asked.

The sun was starting to set outside as I took my leave from Cleo. On the drive home, I pulled up onto the roadside in a layby. There was a quiet road on the way back home from Cleo’s that overlooked fields for miles. This view, coupled with the changing colours in the sky from the sunset, offered a great view. I took a seat against the bonet of my car, watching as the last reds and oranges left the sky and changed into blues, purples, blacks. I sat listening to the wind whistling through the air and the odd sound of a car passing occasionally. There was an air of peace that fell over me.

She was wearing revealing clothes and heavy makeup, laughing and drinking with a group of men. I couldn't exactly tell what I felt as I watched her in that moment. He sighed and let me go, stepping back reluctantly to answer his phone. “What is it?” Jack said harshly into the phone. His voice was full of power, but none of the sensuality from the night before. I stepped down and sat on the porch step, pushing my feet out of the shade of the porch and into the sun. Jack growled into the phone and leaned against the far railing. My feet played in the hot sand as I waited for him to finish his call, trying my best not to listen in on his conversation. Instead, I stared out at the endless ocean. The sky was a bright blue that merged almost seamlessly with the dark water in the distance. It was going to be another perfect day in paradise.

The off yellow drink was spicy and hard, tasting of pomegranate juice and lemons and an unidentifiable herb that heated up his tongue and spiced his lips. The drink had been named “Sunset” for as long as Ezekiel could remember. A strong brew that was held all year and dished out only once on this joyous occasion, during the three nights of the Celebration.
