the voice preceded the scene where a servant appeared in the darkness surrounding me. “Aaah, go and bring Lady Markbill. I want her to see my beautiful girls. Look how my daughter’s red eyes are so unique,” she turned to the servant happily. The impression she gave me as she was too naïve. But something tickled inside my heart listening to her praising my eyes; no one had ever done that. I’ve always been told my eyes were to be hidden and that I shouldn’t show them. Yet, this woman I could call my mother praised them like a ruby.

His eyes were wide, darting with a frantic, rhythmic movement that was entirely mechanical, searching for connections in the empty air. ​"It’s not just data, Clara," he whispered, his voice trembling. "It’s memories. Vivid, sensory experiences. I remember the smell of ozone in the laboratory where the first integration tests took place—a place that doesn't exist on any map I know. I remember the sound of the founder’s voice, a man who died cycles before I was born. I’m seeing the world through their eyes, overlaid on top of my own vision. Every tree, every rock, every shadow has a file path attached to it."

I whisper to her so that no one else can hear what I'm saying. "You're fast, mariposa. But not quick enough. If you give up now, I'll let you walk." I let her know, giving her an out. I shift upwards so that I'm looking down at her. I notice how her eyes look directly into mine, captivating me. Her eyes are amber in colour, but they don't seem normal. Making me wonder what her natural eye colour must be. She must be wearing contacts, but why? Was she trying to hide?

My eyes widened in disbelief. “What?” I whispered

I whispered. He stopped for a second and looked into my eyes. His eyes seemed to hold mine captive, making me want to submit to him. Then he broke the gaze and fell beside me on the bed. I felt disappointed that instant. Gosh, Harper. Do you want him to go further? I mentally warned myself. I turned to look at him. His eyes were shut. "I'm not playing with your head," he whispered back. He opened his eyes and our gazes locked. I felt nervous again.

Whispers, speaking incoherently. She clamped her hands over her ears, wanting it to stop. But the whispers only grew louder, pounding inside her head, threatening to make her go insane. "Nooo," she cried out, clutching her head tightly. "Make it stop... pleaseeeeee..." The whispers intensified, bearing down on her like a heavy burden. The pain expanded, taking over her body and making her writhe in agony. Suddenly it all stopped. The whispers, the pain, the burning sensation. They were totally gone.

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, feeling the dire need to moisten my drying pipes under the intensity of his eyes. “Your eyes,” I murmured, almost a whisper. I wasn’t sure if he heard me, but then he replied, “what about them?” “I’ve seen them before.” There was a swift whip of air that passed through my face, caressing my skin. It was warm and strong, the wisp of air; just like in my dreams; the same one followed by the watchful silver eyes. It was enough for the flame on the fireplace to hiss wildly, lapping out of the brick encasing it.
