’ Like the fool that I was, asking no questions and always giving all the time. I almost jumped, startled as Remy started to whistle slowly next to me. It was a nice tune but creepy at the same time. How to whistle such a beautiful melody. Intent with a message but feels wrong. It felt like musical instruments had been violated. A whistle was not supposed to sound that good.

I'd used the whistle-tone on half a dozen students already this semester and none of them had resisted this long. A flicker of something — not quite doubt, not quite respect — moved through me before I shoved it aside. Nothing resists the whistle-tone. Nothing ever had. This was no different. It wasn't a radio. It was a whistle. Five notes. C, G, D, A, and E. My heart jumped. I tried to stand up, but my legs were too weak and I fell back down. I crawled toward the edge of the rock, my eyes wide. "Kai?" I whispered into the dark. The whistling stopped. The woods went totally silent again. "Anya?" It was a voice, but it wasn't Kai’s voice. It was deeper and much rougher.

Darius The whistling. The sound of the whistling bounced through the space and engulfed my entire frame. My skin rippled with goosebumps as I stood frozen once more. I had been to hell and back, I had survived a lot of things, but this one? This one was new.
