The fact that I can't shift is bothering me more and more every single day and I am getting really impatient. I have just two days now till it completes two weeks after my birthday, and if I don't shift till then, it will mean that I am defected, that I am an abnormal werewolf who can't shift. My eyes burn with tears when I think of it and I look up at the ceiling to stop them from falling.

“Hold it out flat. Now envision exactly what you want to happen.” I bit my lip. I thought as hard as I could, but still nothing happened. I let out a breath I hadn’t realised I’d been holding in a great huff. “It’s not working,” I whispered. “I can’t do it. I can’t shift.” “No, of course you can! Don’t say that. You’ve just forgotten how, that’s all.” “But what if I haven’t forgotten?” I blinked up at him helplessly. “What if I could never shift in the first place?”

“We should make it there by nightfall if we keep good time.” ...Oh. Shifting... as in that thing I hadn’t managed to master yet. When I’d done it to save Alistair, it was something I was barely even conscious for. Just an automatic response that occurred as a result of the matebond. Some shift at an early age and others shift once they turn eighteen. It also depends on a lot of factors.”

I had concluded that maybe I just wasn’t meant to be anything other than human. “Is this because of the problem you’re having with shifting?”. I pursed my lips before taking a bite of my pancake. “Anger controls my shifts. I can’t do it unless someone pisses me off”. “I don’t believe that for a second. After this week you’ll be able to shift when you want”. “If you say so”. I continued to eat my food; I didn’t have much hope because up until now I still hadn’t been able to do it. But i liked his confidence.

"Ms. Beast is tired of you wasting time." "You call her Ms. Beast?" he asks with a grin. I lift my hands and shrug. "You have your word and I have mine. Are we getting on with this or what?" The frustration in my voice should tip him off that I no longer want to talk. He cocks his head. "You realize you could shift while mating." "What?" No way, absolutely not! "It's rare. With you newly changed you need to be aware of it." "It won't happen." Crap, it better not. But they didn’t have an audience and when the pain hit her, the brother stopped shifting to check on her. Once he stopped shifting, her pain stopped. He didn’t shift enough to cause any damage to his sister the way Dylan did with Emma. They also didn’t know that him shifting first was what was causing it, so when he made sure his sister was ok, he started his shift again. Then the pain hit her again and he stopped, then her pain stopped. After that they realized him trying to shift was causing it. The next time, she did her shift first and was able to complete it without any pain to her brother.
