Why Am I Not Shifting Novels & Stories

From my earliest memories, I recalled being told I'd never shift. That I was cursed, broken, no good. I'd been told it wasn't even possible before I ever tried. But that wasn't right. You couldn't try to shift. The first shift happened. It wasn't anything done on the part of the shifter. "Why didn't I shift at the full moon like everyone else?" I asked, my voice tinged with frustration. "Because you didn't want to," she said, her tone calm and matter-of-fact.

I whispered back to Chase. "Shift change and newbies is what it boils down too. We need to get more training in. Shift change is taking 20 minutes and it should only take 3-5 minutes. I don't like the kids who are on this patrol right here. They play around too much." Damion explained

he threw the stone getting 3 skips. "I was just doing what was expected of me now that I'm Alpha. I thought it would be easier." Ahanu put his hand on my shoulder. "I'm guessing you forgot about the full moon tomorrow and the pack run. How are you going to explain when someone is walking around letting it all hang out if they shifted and forgot their clothes?" "Damn it! Okay just let me think for a minute." I put my head in my hands, why does this have to be difficult.

But at the same time, I knew how important it was for me not to venture off. “There’s been no sign of anything?” I ask “Nothing. The change overs are gradual. If we did it all at once, someone could slip through. No one has seen or heard anything unusual.” “How would you know if they are shifters? They could be a bug and have flown right past you?”

"I just can't believe you've never shifted." I shrugged. "I mean, my parents didn't care enough to show me how to," I said. "Vega told me it hurt like hell, which is another reason I've never shifted, I guess." "It does hurt the first time," she said honestly. "But after you get used to it, it's just like popping knuckles." I cringed and she laughed. "We can go down to the gym tomorrow sometime and I'll show you," she said. Of course, there's a gym in this castle.

“You just miss your man.” “He is not my man.” “Mhm,” Sophia hummed with a grin. “That’s why you look like somebody cut your power off.” I pushed myself up from the chair and started pacing around the room in my heels, arms folded tight across my chest. “I really don’t know what the hell wrong with me,” I admitted quietly, shaking my head. “Like every single time that damn club door opens, my stupid ass keeps hoping it’s him walking through it.” Sophia’s whole face softened instantly.

I exhale sharply. “I hate shifting,” I admit. “I don’t have full control when I do. And I hate that.” “Is that the only reason?” No. “Yes.” He watches me for a long moment, and the weight of his attention makes my skin itch. I look away, fidget with the hem of my leggings. Stare at the wall. Anything to escape that burning gaze. “What’s the other reason?” “There isn’t…” “What’s the other reason, Lyra?” For fuck’s sake.

I could not afford to poison myself when the wolves waited to tear me apart, on either side of the mountain. “I’m not sure I can shift,” I admitted, “I’m pissed off sure, but I don’t feel in danger. And I’m not in any pain…I don’t know how to shift without…” Grey sucked in a sharp breath and mentally filled in the blanks of the things I could not say out loud. I chewed on my bottom lip and looked away from his moon-colored eyes. “Is that the way he made you shift?” he asked softly. I nodded, “Pain mostly. I’m not worried about shifting when my life is in danger, that’s natural. And I know that strong emotions can bring on a shift, but I don’t know much else about it.”

He quickly answered. “Then why haven’t I been able to shift after then?”. “It’s not something that should happen out of the blue, but willing. I fear your other counterpart is stronger than it. That you can’t shift doesn’t mean it isn’t there, but when it’s ready it will show up again, just like before”. Alpha Vaughan words melted something in my heart, and I didn’t know when a tear escaped my eyes. I lifted my feet above the floor, dashing away all thoughts in my head, as I gently pressed my lips against his.

Excruciating, mind numbing pain. “Please stop,” I whimper, but I don’t know if the words find their way out, or if it’s all in my mind. A muffled, panicked voice breaks past the inner torture, but I cannot make sense of it. “Please…” I continue with my body, my bones melting within, fighting against the insatiable urge to shift. “It’s too early,” I argue with myself, or maybe it’s the Goddess who I am bartering with. But shifting too early kills more than it leaves alive. Forced, early shifts are a rare occurrence, only happening when an Alpha shifts, without their pack, or their ranked members.
