I had no idea it was this late. Jace stirs beside me and I immediately turn my attention to him. "Jace! Are you awake? It is me, Amy. We are safe. Dwayne is gone," I blubber nervously. The black wolf's eyes flutter open. I stare into his eyes and with deep joy that he is finally awake. I hold his head in my hands and continue pleading. "I am so glad you are finally awake. You have been unconscious for so long. I was so afraid you would never wake up."

Right before I turned off my phone, I'd received one last message from the wedding planner. [Mr. Duggan, all the paperwork has been taken care of.] I replied: [Thank you.] Then I powered it down. Outside, the sea of clouds stretched on like an endless, silent snowfall. I closed my eyes. For the first time, I realized how light it felt—not having to be the steady one. Not having to be praised for being obedient.

THE AWAKENING Tyla woke to the sensation of fire crawling beneath her skin. Not burning from the outside—burning from within*, as if lightning threaded her veins and refused to settle. On the bookshelf were all the texts I'd studied after becoming Luna. Pack history, ritual regulations, territory management, financial audits. I'd spent countless nights poring over these difficult subjects. All to better fulfill my duties as Luna. But now, it all seemed like a joke. I didn't take these books. They belonged to this pack, not to me. By dawn, I had finished packing all my belongings. One suitcase, one backpack. Five years of marriage, and this is all I had. I could feel the hardness of the docks beneath the blanket under my back, a copy of Watership down in my hands, my head resting comfortably on what felt like Wyatt’s thick thigh as Beau's hand idly ran up and down my leg. I knew the feel of my men, the safety and security of their presence. I hummed contentedly. The cicadas were droning in the background and a Barred Owl called. I could hear the boys roughhousing far off. I set the book aside my hands trailing over my enormous stomach and I smiled, beaming with the tranquility of it all. I felt a kick against my palm and then another.

Chapter Nineteen Halle Wilder ~•~ I was restless throughout the night, I couldn’t even get proper sleep because a part of me was scared. I watched Ivy as she slept peacefully. Maybe I was just being paranoid. Ivy was on my side. After what felt like an eternity, the sun finally came up. Ivy yawned loudly as she stretched her arms and legs out before opening her eyes. When she turned to look at me, she saw that I was wide awake.

Before I could finish, he cut me off impatiently, "Yeah, work's calling. I have to go." He rushed out the door, and I didn't press him further. However, my doubts grew heavier. Was he really that busy? I followed him, and that was when I saw the happy family scene I had just described. I lifted my numb fingers and hit record, capturing the entire scene in front of me. When I returned home, I locked myself in my room and played the video on repeat. While I lay unconscious, someone else had quietly taken my place. What was the point of waking up at all?
