Even though being awakened is a norm in the Arco clan, the process of awakening isn't fun. In fact, many healers awaken their true potential through truly horrifying means. Some gain a new ability when pushed to dangerous extremes that leave them with no choice but to awaken or pass away, while others create chaos with terrifying abilities that they have no idea how to control. THE AWAKENING Tyla woke to the sensation of fire crawling beneath her skin. Not burning from the outside—burning from within*, as if lightning threaded her veins and refused to settle. Her ears rang with a pulse she didn’t recognize. The room swayed above her, a blur of stone ceiling and shadows dancing like living things. She forced her eyes open, gasping for air as something hot pressed against her spine and coursed upward until the world turned white. A hand gripped hers.

Then I woke up. My soul had settled back into my body like water poured into an empty vessel trying to adjust the strange yet familiar shape. Even so, my sense eluded me, it felt like I was still stuck in that place of nothingness. Like I was still dead, still trapped by forces unseen and all powerful. Tap. Tap. The first thing to return was sound. When systems wake, they do it in layers. First the hum—the servers in the control room drawing breath. Then the glow—the monitors warming from blue to white.
