“You’re cold, distant. Is something wrong? Are you okay? Did I do something wrong?" I laugh, but it’s hollow and humorless. Tears sting the corners of my eyes, and I swipe at them before they can fall. “I don't know if you did something wrong, but I have a story to tell you. A boring story.” He blinks, confused. “A story?”

Shayla resisted longer, peppering me with last-minute questions about whether clouds slept and if frogs had birthdays. Lucas waited until the others were settled before speaking quietly. “Can you tell a story?” Something in his tone—hopeful, vulnerable—unlocked a memory deep inside me. “My mother used to tell me stories,” I said softly. “Would you like one of those?” Three heads nodded eagerly. So I began. I told them about the moon that fell in love with the sea but could never touch it, about the brave girl who taught the stars how to sing, about the fox who tricked winter into leaving early.

I told her. "Then what is it? You can tell me anything. I know we have just recently met but you can confide in me. We can talk outside if you don't feel comfortable here." "Let's go to the library," I said. "Start spilling," Amarachi said immediately we got to the library. "Before I start, please promise that you wouldn't judge me."
