Just as the guards reached for her, the mountain sky bled a deep, ominous red. BOOM! A thunderous explosion rocked the hall. Avery felt the heat of the blast wash over her skin. The crowd surged in a panic, their cries for mercy lost in the roar of the flames. The banquet hall, once a symbol of luxury, was now a portrait of the hell it had always been beneath the surface. Avery felt a spark of triumph. She had been waiting for the fire. The guards were momentarily blinded by the smoke. Seizing the window, Avery slipped away, disappearing into the haze. She sprinted until her lungs burned and her skin was slick with sweat.

“Romance does not exist in your world. It never has. You’re a monster… just like me.” I say nothing. “The only other person who understood that was your late wife, Sabrina,” he continues. “And she realized it too late.” The word stays in my head. The room fades without warning. Heat replaces air. Flames.
