He laid his glasses down on the desk in front of him and rubbed his tired eyes. The crackling of flames could be heard as the city burned all around them. The blood curdling screams of the men in the streets where they died was enough to make the blood of the fiercest warrior run cold, but he was a man of empathy and it hurt him more than it did the others.

As I wrapped my arms around Roxy, I was met with a surprise: the fiery passion that had once threatened to consume me when we touched was still present, but it had transformed. The flames that had once raged like a wildfire now burned with a gentle, soothing warmth. It was a comforting sensation, one that felt strangely familiar, and yet, utterly safe. Chapter 24 The world was falling apart around us. My lungs were filled with smoke thick, heavy, choking smoke, as the ruins jangled under the weight of their own displacement. Flames licked up the walls, twisting and curling like snakes hunting for food. The twins’ wail was muffled against my chest, their tiny bodies pressed close as I ran. I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t slow down. Not now.

My instincts screamed at me to turn back, but I ignored them. I reached out. The second my fingers brushed the book’s surface, a violent shudder tore through me. The world around me vanished. Fire. The vision struck hard and fast, like a blade to my mind. I saw flames swallowing the land, smoke choking the sky, the ground trembling beneath the weight of something monstrous. Shadows moved through the fire, writhing, shifting, forming grotesque shapes—creatures unlike anything I had ever seen. Wolves fought against them, their howls lost in the chaos. A battlefield soaked in blood.

“Why? Is it because of-“ Movement behind him caught her attention and she saw huge wings in the sky, right before the sky exploded with fire. She didn’t think, she pushed him to the ground, covering his body with hers as the fire rained down on them.

I summoned my wings, and red wings flapped on my back as my body rose in the air and out of the hell of fire. Lucien’s eyes widened at the sight of me as he staggered backward and sat up. He built a barrier between him and me, but I watched as he inched backward on his ass as I slowly walked toward him. My hands were raised with my palms up, and fire emitted from them, but in between them, shards of big thorn-like spikes were dancing around.

Stripes. Burning across my body like fire. The air itself seemed to change. The wolves hesitated. Just for a second. That was their mistake. I moved. Faster than before. Stronger. Unstoppable. I tore through them. No hesitation now. No strategy. Just dominance. One after another. They fell. Until only one remained. Celdor stepped forward. Finally. I tilted my head slightly, blood dripping from my jaw. “You should have stayed hidden.” He didn’t respond.

Kael found me on the ridge, watching the fires below. “You did good,” he said. “I’m tired of doing good,” I said. “Good,” he said. “Means you’re not done.” Kade joined us. He didn’t say anything.
