she sobbed. The Burn had tormented dragons for over two decades. Many dragons have lost their families to the terrible blight. No one knew how it started, or how to cure it. We just knew it killed. The Burn gets triggered when a Dragon tries to take their shifted forms. All Dragon Shifters can breathe fire in their shifted forms, which makes us immune to fire. But The Burn turns a Dragon fire against them, making them burn from the inside out. The only way to avoid succumbing to the plague is to not shift, essentially denying us the right to be ourselves. It's easier for adult dragons to fight the urge to shift, but it's way harder for dragons in transition.

It was a perfect, terrifying blend of us. It had Dante’s lethal, massive frame and his predator’s stance, but from its spine erupted a pair of wings that were an exact, burning replica of mine. They weren't made of "Void-Lead" or "Obsidian-Gold." They were made of Primal Fire, a deep, arterial red that seemed to drink the light from the room.

Ravi focused his vision further to ensure that the object the man held wasn't what he thought it was. The man's hand moved, still gazing, and Ravi's eyes widened when he could see clearly. Ravi froze, subconsciously gripping Raymond's wrist tightly. He saw a shimmering sword smeared with red liquid that was undoubtedly blood. But it didn't end there. Ravi froze further without realizing it, tightening his hold on Raymond's wrist as he observed the man's wings, which were white and almost identical to Raymond's. The wings flapped, and he flew away somewhere.

The vision struck hard and fast, like a blade to my mind. I saw flames swallowing the land, smoke choking the sky, the ground trembling beneath the weight of something monstrous. Shadows moved through the fire, writhing, shifting, forming grotesque shapes—creatures unlike anything I had ever seen. Wolves fought against them, their howls lost in the chaos. A battlefield soaked in blood.

That night, I read until my eyes blurred. The pages were filled with ancient script, but the drawings told their own story—two figures locked in battle: one made of fire, the other of shadow. Beneath them, the earth cracked open and swallowed the world. They were born of the same spark, the text read, but one sought to consume while the other sought to protect. And when the balance was lost, the Fire and the Shadow turned on each other. My breath caught as I flipped to the next page.
