She sat herself back against the body of the tree and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as she seized this moment to rest. Amidst the overwhelming mixture of emotions, Rowan leaned her head back and gazed up at the sky. For the first time in days, the clouds had all but dissipated and the nighttime sky was illuminated by the stars in the heavens. Rowan’s eyes were locked on their beauty; despite the terrible things that happened recently, the stars shone elegantly with a distant brilliance, as though they had transcended beyond all the darkness of this world.

It was now November and winter had come on strong. Shaw special ordered coats and boots for Amelia and me, apparently the stuff I had wouldn't work for us here. Rowan gave me a detailed briefing on the company’s operations. With his help, I quickly got up to speed and threw myself into the work.
