I ask, trying to keep my mind off my dying mate, who is now so weak she’s barely breathing.
“I don’t remember,” the witch says quietly. She sighs, closing her eyes. “Your mate might die.”
I lick my lips and squeeze Ella’s hand. “What can be done?”
The witch tilts her head to the side, her eyes still closed. She whispers something to herself in a language I’m only vaguely familiar with. It’s an old tongue–the language spoken when the other Firestone cities, like Veiled Valley, were still standing. She opens one eye, squinting, and adjusts the position of one of the crystals.
