Old, witch-begotten. My hands trembled as I pulled it free. It was heavier than I expected, and colder too—as if it had a life of its own. I placed it carefully on the reading table, brushing off heavy layers of grime with my sleeve. The cover was plain of title, bearing only a carved serpent entwined around a crescent moon. My heart skipped. This wasn't just a book. This was sacred. or demonic. I opened the first page. "Let the darkness be born in blood. Let the son of the accursed bloodline rise out of the ashes of the slain witches. His mate will bleed, and from her womb will come salvation… or destruction."

Stevie cleared her throat and leaned forward to rest her forearms on the table. “I don’t know how else to say this, so I’m just going to say what I think, okay? All the fairy tales about witches, vampires, werewolves, fae, and so on are true. Our grandfather was the one that founded the treaty with Randall Cane and Jackson’s father, to keep peace among the races. You’re a born witch from the Knox coven, descendent of Marcus Knox, who was the leader and founder of the Alaskan coven.” “Okay, but why did you freak out, about the dream?”

My hand drifts toward one of the volumes. The title alone makes me draw back. The History of Witches and Warlocks. I nearly drop it. Such books are forbidden within these walls, condemned as dangerous, heretical. Even Father, stern though he was, would never have permitted one in his library. How then is it here, in the attic, with others like it? For when I look again, I see more titles lined along the shelf and strewn upon the table. The Book of Spells and Witchcraft. Witches and Courts: The Battle. Battle of Magic. Witches and Their Origin.

"They have, ever since she was born." Cassandra set the little serpent among the piles of gold coins. The creature sagged in defeat and exhaustion after lying before that terrible fire. "There it is," Vasilisa's voice came from behind a mountain of walnut-sized raw rubies. It wasn't hard to find the book. It was placed on a golden stand in between two golden Sirin statues. The grimoire turned out to be the largest book Cassandra had ever seen, with pages made of parchment illuminated with tracery, and it was open to a page thickly covered with elegant, intricate writing.

Her eyes drifted to the heading at the top of the page. {The Chronicles of Sorcerers.} Curiosity replaced her relief. She began reading. The book spoke of an age long before the kingdoms of today. An age when sorcerers lived openly among dragons, wolves, and hybrids. Some wielded magic to heal the sick. Others used it to conquer entire nations. Many were celebrated. Many were feared. As Adriana continued turning the pages, one chapter heading immediately caught her attention. ~The Flame Witch.~ She frowned. The title stirred something deep inside her.

"Talking to the witch when you should be taking what she knows." Everything happened too fast. Draeven launched himself at the witch, his corrupted claws extended. She threw up a shield of shimmering light, but he tore through it like paper. I heard her scream as his claws raked across her side, saw blood spray black against the snow. "No!" I didn't know why I shouted it. Didn't know why my body moved before my mind caught up. I crashed into Draeven, sending us both sprawling. My warriors stood frozen, confused, caught between orders and instinct.

His intestines were spilled out and there was something left behind, or deliberately left behind by the criminal to scare me. I screamed, threw the box, and Ben came running with Jeremiah. "This is not a murder committed by a normal human or a werewolf," Jeremiah said after examining Pops' body. "What do you mean?" He turned to me, who was clutching my stomach. My body had been shivering with fear since earlier. This was the most terrifying experience of my life. "The perpetrator is a witch," Jeremiah replied. "There are no traces of human touch. Your dog was killed with a spell."

I came from a family of witches. When we came of age, every woman in our line awakened a gift. I could siphon my husband's luck through marriage. The rule was simple. After we married, each time he betrayed me, the universe paid compensation. A portion of his fortune slipped away from him and into my hands. Outside the window, bright fireworks filled the sky. They burst and stitched themselves into a name. Kimberly Swan was his mistress. When I did not explode the way people expected, Jasper Prescott grew even more entitled.
