Wish
Then a familiar voice greets us, “You’re late. I’ve been waiting here for the past half hour.”
There’s a clicking sound, and a bulb is turned on, flooding the room with light.
I don’t have to see to recognize Jesse.
He’s munching on something, and he winks at me. “Hello, again.”
“Hey Jesse,” I respond, slowly. “Are you also here for the night thing—duty something?”
Jesse gets to his feet, brushing off the crumbs from his shirt. “Yeah. We’re on first guard tonight.”
“Um,” I look around the dirty little shack, before asking, hesitantly, “And what exactly are we guarding?”
