Behind him was a younger Hispanic, his face smooth and unblemished, almost like a baby’s head stuck on an adult body.
The older officer said, “Ma’am, sorry if we woke you. Are you Mrs. Barrett?”
She clutched the top of the robe and thought, Of course! Dressed this way with my hair looking like a rat’s nest, it would be natural to assume they woke me. That could account for why it took me so long to come to the door. I can even use this to my advantage if I’m smart, play up the grogginess and confusion.
“Um, yes, I am. What seems to be the problem?”
