I watch, she watches me. “What? You're telling me something will happen?” I ask her. Yes, do you accept me? The wolf asks. “Yeah? Why wouldn’t I?” I ask back. Then it will be as it should be. I look at her, confused. I knew if I asked her what that meant, I wouldn't get a straight answer. “What is your name?” She tilts her head as if she’s thinking. Does she know what a name is? Or is she debating on telling me? I almost don't think she is going to answer me for whatever reason, with how much time passes. Luna

I liked my fieldwork and time away too much. The wolf gene was prominent in the hills next to the Adirondacks. The recessive trait occasionally found its mate, ensuring the survival of our species. Only a few members of the next generation were lucky enough to find the other half of their soul. Thankfully, our Alpha was one of them, securing the stability of the pack.

“It’s quite unique. Even for a wolf. I was worried if it was ever registered, they would be able to find me” Michelle looked the most excited at a unique name. “What is it?”. “Lewana. I have been called Eve for so long now I prefer it so still call me Eve”. “That’s an amazing name. Does it mean something?”. “Well, names have a lot of meaning to wolves, and they name their pups after what they hope for them. For example, Conrad means brave counsel. Liam means determined guardian. Lewana means shining moonlight. Mother said she named me that as she knew I was special, and by being the shining light wolves needed, I could guide the lost ones home”.

They were about to call it quits for the night when a young wolf called out, "Wait, we did not get to the new name for the pack." Everyone stopped and looked surprised until they realized they had gotten off track with everything else. Mark stood and said to the young wolf that had called out, "Vine, why don't you tell us our new pack name?" Vine beamed as he said, "Under the whispers of night, we will rescue, save, and shelter all in need, for we are the Night Whispers Pack."

"Alright! Back to the point. I need a name." "Killery." "Beastery." "Fury." "Guys? Do you really think that adding e-r-y to a name would make it cute?" "I didn't add e-r-y to Fury." I glared at Nate. "Custard. Name it Custard." Everyone looked at Ace. Shocked that he managed to give a cute name that doesn't need to sound forced. "Custard." I repeated the name and actually liked the sound of it. "Hey that is it!" I said and carried the little wolf to my lap. "His name is now Custard. How about it boy?" I asked if the little wolf expected it to bark or something like in movies, but it just fell asleep on my lap.

Kane and Cyrus thought about it and finally Cyrus shouted, “the new wolves!” Ariel and Kane shrugged, “fine.” Ariel started to giggle, “it’s better than the names Samantha suggested.” Cyrus laughed, “now I want to fucking know those names. Tell us.” “Wolf-gang, Iron River cookies, Bite or die, my little wolfie, she combined our names into Kaarcy, the care wolves, instead of care bears. She goes on forever.” Ariel giggled. Everyone laughed, “o we’re sticking with the new wolves,” Kane said.

I was taught as a child many years ago about the Exalted. The Exalted were the name given to the first of their kind. There was one for every race; legend told that when the world needed it most, an Exalted would be reborn and shape the world back to what it was initially meant to be. The Exalted always had three others with them. Their forever mates, Protector, Warrior and Provider, their bond was unbreakable and eternal. “Ayla, you are an Exalted,” I say, knowing she still wouldn’t understand for a while. “You are Alune. The first wolf shifter.”
