A howl with a purpose. A quarter of the warriors followed and shifted, the sound of bones breaking and skin tearing serving as the music as the sun started to set. The battle willl stretch ‘til night. In place of the men were wolves, all mighty and ferocious. Fierce slit eyes, a magnificent mane of fur, and razor sharp nails digging the soil. The wolves sat and it was the others’ cue to climb onto them. Atleast four men could ride one wolf. Another howl came from Flavian, and altogether, the wolves huffed and took a leap. In the blink of an eye, all that was left of them were dust from the utter speed.

Fagua I stumbled backwards as the wolves closed in. His words promised to deliver exactly what he’d said. I didn't know what he'd do to me, but I didn't like the gleam in his eyes or the wolves around me. "How come you've never turned, girl? Got too much of your damn Ma in you." He sneered. "All you need is a few bites to get the change fever going. Handy it's a full moon coming up soon." I'd never been bitten by a wolf my entire life. "That won't work. If I haven't become a wolf now, I won't ever."

I looked around and saw the chaos unfold. Mama met the first wave head-on. Her body blurred as she shifted—Zerina, her massive white wolf, erupted in a flash of golden light. She leapt into the air, jaws clamping down on the neck of the first rogue mid-leap. She twisted, slammed him to the ground, and whirled again. Daddy shifted seconds later, Zyan’s silvery-black fur streaking through the trees like a shadow. He didn’t hesitate. One rogue down, then two. The glow from their bodies pulsed with each movement—gods at war.

"And then the debt collectors will come for both of us and seize pack lands, and every wolf in Crescent Moon Pack will lose their homes because you were too selfish to accept your fate. Can you live with that?" The trap closes around me so perfectly I almost admire the cruelty. He knows I cannot let the pack suffer for his mistakes, recognizes I have spent three years protecting these wolves from his incompetence, and admits I will choose their safety over my freedom. Oh so she's a worshipper of the asshole as well! Too bad! Both of them shift into their wolves, Jessica's a medium sized brown wolf with brown eyes, and Emory’s a grey wolf with green eyes. “Begin!" The professor calls out.

she replied. “A bear?” I gasped. “There are bears in these woods?” “Bears, bobcats, wolves,” she said. “Its nature, my dear.” “How did you keep the bear from smelling you?” I asked. “I had the wolf scent on me,” she explained. “For the most part, bears tend to ignore wolves and vice versa.” “Do you think it’s still around?” I nervously asked. “I don’t know,” she said. “What I do know is that we’re in greater danger from those two werewolves who tried to abduct us than we are from that bear.”

Chapter Five Halle Wilder ~•~ As I packed my bags, my hands trembled with every item I folded. Maybe leaving was the best option. There was nothing here for me anymore. Who knows if I would eventually find my wolf when I get to the academy? Anywhere would be better than being with people who hurt me and ended up manipulating me to think it was for my own good. I wasn’t a child anymore, and they had no right to hide anything from me. Maybe they thought they were just trying to protect me, but I didn’t need their protection.

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

I was from Saint town and alpha was Alpha Saul, he was also the Leader of Saint town. When I was little, in the orphanage home, the caretakers told us stories about the other side of the town, it was a whole community on its own. It was called the Stray town. The tales told it was a town for the strongest of our kind, but others said it was the dwelling of the most mischievous and ambitious of our kind. The rich and powerful dwelt there. They were all red werewolves. The most powerful wolves ever lived.

The ones who never needed alliances to survive, yet lately the world has been shifting under all of us. Hunter groups vanishing. Packs uniting. Rumours of goddesses and resurrected wolves, and magic that feels older than the moon. And now a strange girl in a coffee shop, marked by something our wolves can’t name. My wolf paces with anticipation; he senses the change coming. When morning comes, I tell myself it is a simple recon mission. Bastian and I don’t need theatrics. We don’t need a parade of pack members or a show of power. We’ll go in, observe, and then leave. That is the plan.
