I made my way back to the dining room. Brixtius was sitting in his place, and little Eurydice is running through the opposite doorway. She's starting to feel better from her injury because her energy is returning to full throttle. "Papa! Papa!" She shouts excitedly. "We read about Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus!" "And what did you learn about these two men?" Brixtius quizzes. "Julius Caesar was beloved by the people and was murdered because of it. But if it weren't for Caesar, Emperor Augustus would never have existed," the girl recites. Damn! That was the most straightforward answer I've ever heard about those two men!

Sant came over to him and propped one hand on the edge of the table. “What are you reading?” he asked while looking at the book Lev was reading. “Is this a book about the war?”

I can’t remember our pack ever going to war with any other packs except rogues, and even then, we only fought when they attacked us in our own home. “We did what had to be done. All is fair in war, and in war, one side must lose for the victor to emerge. They’ve already caused us so much, it’s only right we repay the favour twice as blunt,” another man spoke, and the rest of the people grunted in approval.

I also prayed earnestly that he didn’t forget me here. I spotted a bookshelf at the far end of the room and decided to look through it in hopes of finding something to read. The majority of the books were about werewolves and the pack’s history. There were also books about politics, war, and governance. I would have loved to pick up the book that contained information on all members of the Crescent Moon Pack, but I decided against it. It would seem like snooping. I finally settled on a book titled ‘The Art of War.’ Not that I was a fan of violence but I was curious to know why the author had referred to war as an art. It was such a controversial claim.

I browsed the shelves, and I read the titles. I paused in front of a book that I deemed the most interesting. I pulled it out of the shelf and stared at it, contemplating whether to get on with it or not. Wow. I was drooling. It wasn't just a room with books. It was a sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with hardcovers, a rolling ladder, a massive fireplace that looked like it hadn't been used in decades. The scent of old paper and leather hit me, comforting and familiar. I ran my finger along the spines. ‘The Art of War’, ‘Sun Tzu’. ‘Histories of the Roman Empire’. Biographies of kings and conquerors. Heavy stuff. Interspersed with them were fiction classics. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dumas.

The more I look through the book the more confused I become by the first few pages. The sharp contrast between the image of impending danger for the child to the full out war are like two sides of a coin. As I look over the images of the war I find myself going back and forth through the pages trying to make sense of what I’m seeing. What was the cause? Why did this war break out? I couldn’t help but find myself transfixed on the images of each page. The image while gruesome, we also hauntingly gorgeous and well done. But they needed some of the text to help answer some of my questions.

For the next three hours, Waverly sat curled on the couch, absorbed in her novel about a World War II couple writing letters back and forth to one another during the height of the event. Even though Waverly had never given much consideration until late about finding her match, she still was passionate about reading stories surrounding the idea of fantastical love found in the most conventional and trope-like characters.

I told myself over and over again until my heart rate slowly returned to normal and she could no longer hear the wind blowing outside. I returned my gaze to the book I was reading. It was the historical account of the war that happened a hundred years ago. Before the world, as everyone knew it, ended. In 2100, the third largest war in human history took place. But that is not between two countries or groups of countries. It was between vampires and werewolves. That was right, vampires and werewolves.
