The bleeding had stopped, but the wound still looked gruesome. Not letting my wounds make me in a bad mood, I simply took another handful of water and let it run down my stomach. The blood was washed away, turning the water red with it. I looked at the burn on my arm and saw that most of the blisters and scabs were gone, and the skin was a deep pink all around it. It didn't hurt very much which was good, but I let a handful of water run over it just to be safe.

"The internal bleeding is getting worse." James waved away her concern with surprising lucidity. "Plenty of time for doctors once we're clear," he insisted, though the pallor of his skin told a different story. "Keep cranking, Rodriguez. Or did all those mornings in your private gym count for nothing?" The familiar banter steadied Alex as he applied more force to the stubborn mechanism. A metallic groan rewarded his efforts as the door began to inch open. "Almost there," he announced, muscles straining.

Finally, I can see him, but seeing him doesn’t lessen the terror that is gripping me. He is lying facedown in the water, unmoving. I call out his name and reach into the water, grabbing him by the shoulders and pulling his upper body out of the water. There is an ugly gash on his forehead, where the old wound which had been healing nicely, had reopened and even widened. They crashed over the edges of the platforms, cursed the hanging gardens of tidal rebels with fresh, pure water and shower the frost of the roofs. The fragrant water rained in an endless, glittering curtain down into the torn sky. I leaned hard against Kael.
