Writing In Future Tense Novels & Stories

But a future chosen, one story at a time. --- The End.

Not since the night he read one aloud to the world. But now he wanted to write one for someone who didn’t exist yet. Someone small. Scared. Curious. Like he once was. “Dear Future Heart,” “You don’t have to be brave yet. You just have to be here. We’ll do the brave part for you until you can.” He saved the draft. Outside, the moon rose slowly over the lake. Quiet, but not empty. Alive.

But the words wouldn’t come, no matter how much I tried to force them out. For a few minutes, at least, I would allow myself to imagine that the future could be different. Even if I knew it was nothing more than a sweet fantasy.

The future doesn’t arrive with instructions. It doesn’t explain itself. It doesn’t promise clarity. It doesn’t guarantee reward. It simply opens—and waits. This chapter begins with that openness. Not fear, not excitement—possibility. Wide and undefined. The kind that doesn’t pressure you to decide everything at once, but quietly asks whether you’re willing to keep walking. Together. We don’t talk about the future in grand terms here. No sweeping declarations. No rigid plans. Instead, we approach it the way we’ve learned to approach everything else—honestly, intentionally, and without pretending certainty is a prerequisite for commitment.

But now— the future wasn't something surviving toward us. It was something opening before us. The realization settled softly into the room. Then Noah grinned. Dangerous sign. "We could write anything." The creator looked horrified. Hope looked delighted. Identical energy. Different directions. Elowen laughed. "Not anything." The library lanterns glowed brighter. "The future writes itself." She tapped the blank pages gently. "You simply live it." Silence followed. Comfortable silence. The kind that arrives when a truth finds its place. I looked down at the unfinished book.

My future. No matter what.

They are age-old writings and so I can't understand them. "What's the point? I see but don't understand it." I murmured. I was ready to snatch it from the air when my face reflected in the paper. It was me that I never meet yet. It must be in the future. Wait, this paper is showing me my future?

He didn’t need to. Deep down, I inhaled, smooth and full. “Welcome to our future.”

I quickly added: “No need to write your names. This isn’t a test. I want you to write me a letter. Tell me who you want to become in the future. What do you dream of doing? Would you like to join a dance class? Singing? Acting? Maybe painting, football, hockey — anything at all. Just write down what excites you, what you’re passionate about. And remember, this is anonymous. You’re free to write whatever your heart desires.” I smiled at them, and I noticed a few eyes light up with curiosity and… something close to hope.

This time, I was writing the script. And tomorrow would be just the beginning.
