"Come home this weekend for Tara’s birthday party." Her tone was cold as though she were making a routine announcement. That was my mom, Margaret Salem. Tara, whom she mentioned, was my late aunt's daughter. My aunt had passed away when Tara was very young and so she had been taken in by my family. Over the past 16 years, Tara and Mom had seemed more like mother and daughter than I had ever felt with her. I didn't want to be an audience to their tear-jerking mother-daughter bond.

She felt like a failure as a mother. Sebastian nodded. "I'll take you there." Right now, she needed her son's company more than anything. After dinner, Sebastian drove Lisbeth to the hospital himself. They found Dennis lying bored in his hospital bed. The child was still weak and could do little more than rest. Seeing his mother, his face lit up. "Mommy." Lisbeth gently stroked Dennis's small face. "Mommy's here to see you. I'm staying with you tonight." At three years old, Dennis didn't understand much about the world. But he understood this. "Yay, Mommy stays."

Claire thought she would be the first, but Momo Sun—her most reliable subordinate, had arrived already. Seeing the other woman, she smiled, "What brings you here this early?" "Good Morning, Ms. Wilson," Momo smiled in greeting. "Actually, I went to the Qi Temple, hoping to get a health charm for the family… but I got nothing. It's so frustrating!" "Got nothing? How?" Claire asked in curiosity. "Were they closed?" "Oh, they were open," Momo shrugged. "But I misremembered Master Jeevika's schedule—he's only coming tomorrow, so I went for nothing."

"Mom." Drake froze.

"Lady Matilda." "Mr. James," she replied, smiling warmly. "Good morning, sir. How can I help you?" "Meet Bisila," he said, gesturing toward her. "She’s the newest addition to our household. She'll be in charge of caring for my daughter-in-law." Lady Matilda’s smile widened, though Bisila could sense a slight hesitation in her eyes. "Welcome, young lady. It’s a pleasure to meet you." "You too, Matilda," Bisila replied with a nod.

His lips felt hot against her skin, a painful contrast to the frost in his eyes. "Pleased to meet you, Mommy," Xavier whispered, emphasizing the word with deep mockery. As he pulled back, he leaned slightly toward her, close enough for his sharp, masculine scent to overwhelm her senses. "You look very expensive tonight, Elara. How much did my father pay to make you kneel at his feet?" Elara’s blood ran cold. "Xavier, how is this possible?" she whispered, barely audible. "Nothing is impossible, Mom. We’ve been reunited, haven't we? You walked right into your own hell," he hissed intimidatingly.

The endless, endless ones. But Liam had been put in charge of entertainment, and Liam took his role seriously. “Okay, everyone,” Liam announced, standing on a chair. “We're going to play a game called ‘How Well Do You Know Mom?’” Victoria groaned. Nathaniel, standing beside her, laughed. “Question one,” Liam continued. “What is Mom's favorite food?” “Coffee,” Dr. Simmons called out. “That's not a food.” “It's a food group.” Liam consulted his list. “The answer is chocolate. Dark chocolate, specifically. From Belgium.”
