He ran the drill again.

By the end of the first week, Adrian could do it in his sleep—cross the room, locate the outlet behind the bookshelf, plug in the USB device disguised as a phone charger, straighten the books to hide it, and exit. He averaged twenty-eight seconds, sometimes hitting twenty-six if everything went perfectly. But perfection was a luxury we couldn’t count on, and I saw the toll it was taking in the dark hollows under his eyes, the way his hands trembled even when he wasn’t training, and the mechanical way he moved through the world like a man already dead.
