Mrs. Yoshida was one of the invited guests, representing the Japanese ambassador.”

“Aya was very beautiful. She was Japanese- American.” Dad gently taps me on my shoulder. ‘‘You should go home and get some sleep.” I shake my head. “I’m fine, Dad.” After an hour, I go out of the room to get some fresh air. The wind is blowing gently in the cold afternoon. I gaze at the hills across the street. My eyes focus on a figure of a woman standing near it. I can’t clearly see her face because she’s wearing big sunglasses and a black hat. She’s wearing a black ruffle dress as well. I try to focus my gaze. She looks quite familiar… Yuri Haruko?

I tried to summarize Akio. Mom frowned, her brow furrowed in thought. “Is this girl American?” she asked. I rolled my eyes. I know my mom isn’t fond of the idea of being getting involved with American women. She still hasn’t fully let go of what the country did to her, my dad, and other citizens that are of Japanese descent during the war. “No, mom. She's Japanese. Akio Yoshida.” I answer, smiling just thinking about her.

They both stare at each other in disgust- “Uweh… It’s you…,” they say at the same time. The girl was another one of his friends named Ayame. She had long black hair and was really beautiful. A slender body to a pretty face. Everyone looked up to her but she never made contact with anyone other than Akihiko since he made contact with her first by calling her something ridiculous. She stood first in academics every single year. Her eyes looked just like Akihiko’s. They were blood red in colour. These were the only human friends he has had from middle school.

Still, I will happily flirt with anyone who doesn't seem too embarrassed to talk to me. A little about myself. As I said, my name is Ayumi. I am Japanese-American. Full Japanese by birth, but I've been living in America since I was young. I have embraced the American culture, but work very hard at hanging onto my Japanese roots. Of course, if my mom had even an inkling of what I do for "work", she would make short shrift of putting an end to this lifestyle. Fortunately, she rarely visits. Usually I go to see her, in Kyoto, my old hometown.
