I mutter quietly while pretending to browse the front table. Cillian stays close behind me. Too close to qualify as casual. “Good.” I glance over my shoulder. “You’re impossible.” “Aye.” No shame. Never shame. His eyes stay moving constantly while he speaks, scanning exits, customers, and reflections in windows. Always alert. Always dangerous. And somehow still holding my coffee order in one hand because he remembered I’ve suddenly become obsessed with caramel. Pregnancy is humiliating. The smell of coffee hits me stronger as we move deeper into the bookstore, and suddenly my stomach twists.

That was why I grabbed my son from the daycare immediately and hurried home, checking over my shoulder the entire way. I wanted to believe it was nothing. That I was just being overly cautious. But I’ve learned the hard way that paranoia isn’t just a symptom of fear. It’s a survival instinct. Now, standing in my small apartment, I swallow hard and lock the door, checking the windows for the third time tonight. My hands tremble slightly as I slide the latch into place, my pulse a little too fast. No one is coming for you, I tell myself. No one knows where you are.

It’s just in your head.’ I chanted the mantra repeatedly, even though I knew it wasn’t only in my head. I wasn’t crazy. No matter what the police said, I couldn’t be paranoid enough to imagine the same horrifying thing again and again.

“Hold on!” I roll my eyes and slowly walk while also waiting for him to catch up. I am holding my tote bag on my left side and the book on my right. Since I am still into this book, I decided to continue reading after the class or while Damian is discussing if I can.
