My mouth was still the same, that top lip slightly bigger than my bottom one. “Do you feel older?” I asked. She shrugged her slim shoulders. “Not really. But we’re eighteen now. Legal adults.” My lips curved into a smile. I wasn’t quite sure if I felt like an adult. Or that I was even ready to be an adult. I was certainly in no rush.

I yawned while sitting upright. “It's 4 pm. It's time for the youth to wake up from last night's hangover and go have fun. You see this thing of working at 22? You don't have a social life. 22-year-olds are either in clubs or stadiums. They are having fun.” She's so rambling. “What do you want from me Emihle?”

To make a long story short I was caught, tried and convicted. I had the great good luck to be tried under a fairly new Federal law called the Youthful Offenders Act. Basically the YOA was a program pushed through with the thought of rehabilitation in mind. If you were between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, had no previous record and the crime for which you were arrested was non-violent in nature you could be tried under the YOA.

"It's a disaster that we don't know when it happened. So you don't have to feel guilty. It's part of the adult life journey, Jong." Kai broke the hug. Cupping both of Hyomi's chubby cheeks. "So, you feel like an adult now?" Hyomi tickled Kai's stomach until the man laughed amusedly. "Of course! We're already in our mid-twenties!" "Alright alright." Kai relented rather than continue to be amused. "But I'm going to ask you one thing." "What's that?" “I can buy my own damn drinks.” I laughed, relieved that she had somehow broken the nervous tension between us. “That was one time,” I protested. “And if you remember, I was underage too. I just had the benefit of being tall and having an ID that actually, you know, looked like me. Unlike some people.” Audrey grinned and nudged me with her shoulder. “Those were the good old days, weren’t they?” she asked, sounding surprisingly wistful. I raised an eyebrow at her. “And here I figured you were having your good old days now, and that’s why you haven’t been back to North Carolina in so long. What have you been up to anyway?”

The future has many possibilities, so how come one isn’t good enough? The last time I got a part-time job, I got kicked out of college. The last time I made friends, they threw me away when I needed them the most. The last time I went to college, the whole year was a disaster. How did life become so hard? Being an adult, just urgg. “Dang. I miss being a kid,” I say to myself. “Who doesn’t?” A voice spoke, Wendy. “How long have you been here?” She hesitates, ”Maybe a minute or two. I heard loud groans and I thought you were injured. I guess I was wrong.”
